Automotive Mechanic

The Pittsford Central School District is looking for an Automotive Mechanic. This is a 12-month, 260 work days, 8 hours a day, Monday–Friday from 7am–4pm position. This is a skilled mechanic position responsible for completing basic repairs to motor vehicles and equipment such as passenger vehicles, trucks (including vans, school buses, pickups, and environmental services equipment), ground maintenance equipment (including tractors, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment) and tools and equipment for the school district. Employees may work under unpleasant working conditions, including extremes of heat, cold, fumes and odors, wet, damp and cramped working areas. Work is performed independently or with a repair team under limited supervision. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, the Head of Maintenance or a higher-level staff member for non-routine, difficult, or costly repair work. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed)

  • Supervises the work of maintenance mechanics
  • Operation of the maintenance garage & lifts
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, shop equipment and spare parts
  • Assists in preparation of specifications for special equipment and provides input into the purchase of vehicles & equipment
  • Keeps records of equipment, purchases, motor vehicle inspections, registrations & repairs
  • Performs standard heavy equipment and automotive repairs to gasoline and/or diesel engines and hydraulic systems
  • Rewires electrical systems
  • Repairs electric motors, tools, and equipment
  • Performs preventive maintenance functions, including lubrication, fluid checks, major and minor tune-ups, and safety inspections of trucks, vans, automobiles, and other heavy equipment
  • Repairs mechanical parts on sweepers, loaders, salt spreaders, backhoes, and other public works equipment
  • Diagnoses automotive problems caused by maladjustment, worn, damaged, or defective parts, or improper lubrication
  • Checks for automotive problems using visual observation, tactile contact, road test, and manual or computerized shop testing equipment
  • Pre-check of New York State authorized inspections of road vehicles
  • Operates machine shop equipment to make or repair parts for automotive equipment
  • Performs minor collision repair work and straightens and welds frames and fenders
  • Operates & organizes snow removal and road construction equipment.

School Bus Washer - Driver

The Pittsford Central School District is hiring a School Bus Washer - Driver. This is a 12-month, 260-day work, Monday–Friday from 7am–4pm. The successful candidate will be expected to clean, sanitize, and detail the interior and exterior of buses, ensuring a safe, hygienic, and presentable environment for passengers. Responsibilities include washing windows/ceilings, cleaning the floors and seats on the buses, trash removal, and using automated wash bays or pressure washers to clean exteriors. They may also fuel vehicles, report maintenance concerns, and run errands for the transportation department in an official capacity for the district. Additionally, the successful candidate will need to be able to operate a full-sized or mini-sized school bus or van, and/or transport:

  • Passengers on assigned routes to and from school
  • Passengers to and from athletic events and field trips
  • Passengers with disabilities that may require the candidate to physically assist passengers to and from the bus or to operate a hydraulic lift for this purpose.

The successful candidate will report directly to, and work under the general supervision of, a more senior transportation employee or administrator. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be done in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed). 

  • Interior Cleaning:
    • Sanitizing seats, railings, handrails, and driver compartments, removing trash, sweeping, mopping, and cleaning windows
  • Exterior Cleaning: Operating automatic washing equipment, scrubbing wheels, and using high-pressure washers on the exterior body
  • Vehicle Maintenance:
    • Fueling buses, checking fluids, and moving buses to designated bays
  • Safety and Reporting: 
    • Reporting graffiti, damage, or mechanical issues to supervisors and adhering to safety protocols
  • Facility Upkeep: 
    • Maintaining a clean and organized wash bay and workshop area
  • Drive a school bus/vehicle as assigned needed 
  • When Asked to Drive:
    • Perform an inspection of the vehicle prior to departure and post-trip and report findings to the supervisor
    • Instruct/inform passengers about safety practices and procedures when embarking and disembarking 
    • Maintain safe and orderly conduct on the bus/vehicle, including student management
    • Assist passengers in boarding and exiting a bus/vehicle by providing physical assistance or operating a hydraulic lift

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, stoop, and lift heavy items (up to 50 lbs or more) for extended periods
  • Experience in vehicle cleaning, detailing, or a similar labor-intensive role
  • Ability to use industrial cleaning tools and handle cleaning chemicals.
  • Good knowledge of vehicle and traffic law, regulations of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, and regulations of the Commissioner of Education (New York State Education Part 156.3 Transportation Regulations) pertaining to pupil transportation
  • Good knowledge of safe driving practices and defensive driving; good knowledge of the geography of the employing school district or municipality
  • Ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions
  • Ability to physically assist passengers on and off buses
  • Ability to get along well with children/students/passengers
  • Mental alertness; visual and audio acuity; dependability; courtesy

SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS 2025-2026

Thank you for your interest in the Pittsford Central School District!  We are seeking bus drivers to join our team. We have full and part-time positions with flexible hours. We offer paid training, competitive pay, and generous benefits. As a bus driver, the successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation and routine daily maintenance checks of a school bus used in the transport of students on an assigned route to and from school and on athletic and field trips. They will need to be able to operate a full-sized or mini-sized school bus or van, and/or transport passengers with or without disabilities. Employees may be required to physically assist passengers to and from the bus or to operate a hydraulic lift for this purpose. Employees are responsible for the safety and conduct of passengers while in transport and may be accompanied in transit by a bus attendant or other staff member. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a more senior transportation employee or administrator. Direct supervision may be exercised over bus attendants. Does related work as required.

  • Drive a school bus/vehicle on a regular schedule on an assigned route or on special occasions
  • Perform a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle prior to departure and post-trip inspection after every route
  • Report all defects, mechanical and other, of the bus/vehicle to the supervisor
  • Instruct or inform passengers about safety practices and procedures when embarking and disembarking a bus/vehicle, while in transit, and throughout the year
  • Maintain safe and orderly conduct on the bus/vehicle, including student management
  • Assist passengers in boarding and exiting a bus/vehicle by providing physical assistance or operating a hydraulic lift
  • Clean and fuel assigned vehicles daily
  • Operate a van, station wagon, or similar vehicle to transport objects

Bus Attendant 2025-2026

The Pittsford Central School District is looking for Bus Attendants. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining order and ensuring the safety of the children who will ride their assigned route and extends to walking students across the street for purposes of boarding or disembarking the school bus at assigned stops. At all times, the attendant must be concerned about the safe behavior of the children while the bus is en route. Employees of this class may be required to assist developmentally disabled students if assigned to their route and are required to wear safety belts. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Bus Driver or other higher-level staff member. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)

  • Accompany bus driver and students on scheduled route
  • Board and get off the bus at each stop to escort students across the street
  • Supervise the boarding and unloading of student passengers at each stop, at transfer points, and at school sites
  • Assist and lift developmentally disabled students to and from the bus
  • Maintain order on bus
  • Enforce district policy governing student behavior while bus is in operation
  • Assist driver when backing up bus
  • Report orally and in writing instances of continuing disruptive student behavior
  • Request driver to summon emergency aid by two-way radio or operates two-way radio
  • Report trouble at bus stops to driver, terminal, bus garage, or transportation office
  • Assist students with special needs
  • Attend scheduled job training classes and workshops and parent/school/driver meetings
  • Ensure students are seated before bus is in motion
