Job Description

The Pittsford Central School District is looking for a Food Service Field Supervisor. This is a ten-month (10) month, 200 work days, Monday–Friday, eight (8) hours a day position. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the efficient and safe operation of our school cafeterias under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Food Services and the Director of Food Services. This individual should demonstrate expertise in nutritional, state, and federal guidelines for child nutrition programs. Must have the ability to supervise, train and evaluate cafeteria employees, instruct personnel in recipe development, cooking, operation of equipment, record-keeping, financial management and free and reduced-price guidelines and make recommendations for improvement. A successful candidate must possess the ability to analyze and utilize data to maintain efficient and cost-effective cafeteria operations and demonstrate flexibility and readiness to assume responsibilities during staff absences. . General supervision is exercised over the work of Cafeteria Managers, Cook Managers, and other food service personnel. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed).

Regulatory Compliance & Safety

  • Enforce school district and departmental rules, regulations, and procedures by direct observation through regular site visits.
  • Inspect kitchens and food service areas to ensure compliance with health, safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Ensure adherence to USDA, State Education Department, and district food service policies.
  •  Inspect and taste foods to verify quality and edibility.
  • Ensure accurate and complete production records and temperature logs are maintained in all kitchens.
  • Conduct federally mandated self-reviews in all cafeterias. Document findings for SED review.

Operational Oversight

  • Assist in the formulation of policies, procedures and staffing plans for the operation of the School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
  • Assist in the development and revision of standardized recipes.
  • Consult with staff, parents, and students in the schools and community to gather information to improve operations and meet the needs of our stakeholders.
  • Collect and analyze data using surveys and other analytical tools to gather insights and deliver data-driven recommendations to program leadership.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of catering events.
  • Substitute for Cook Managers, Assistant Cook Managers, or Courier and support kitchens when necessary.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement improvements for operational efficiency.
  • Attend meetings and training courses as necessary.
  • Assists with ordering and procurement.
  • Enforce school district and Food Service Department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures by direct observation through frequent visits.

Staff Supervision, Training & Development

  • Plan, perform and direct the training of food service workers and cook managers.
  • Investigate complaints and incidents involving food or food service staff.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing support.
  • Create and facilitate professional development for staff
  • Assist and coach food service staff in schools as needed.

Administrative & Financial Controls

  • Monitor scheduling, timekeeping, and cash handling procedures.
  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of kitchen equipment.
  • Assist in the maintenance of records necessary for sound financial control and prepare reports related to program activities.
  • Supervise and verify food & supply inventorying procedures and counts.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports related to operations and staff performance.

 FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Strong knowledge of federal and state food service regulations.
  • Understanding of nutrition principles and large-scale food preparation.
  • Extensive knowledge of food safety and NYS DOH requirements.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate staff across multiple locations.
  • Effective communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently between school sites.
  • Sound judgment and physical stamina to meet job demands.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and point-of-sale systems.
  • Excellent communication and human relations skills across a diverse workforce.
  • Overtime, evening, and weekend work may be required.
  • Ability to perform work requiring sustained moderate physical effort, movement of objects weighing up to 50lbs, operation of commercial food service equipment, continuous standing and exposure to extreme variations in temperature.

Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, PLUS either:

  • Option A:
    Associate’s degree in Food Service Administration, Nutrition, Hospitality, or a related field, AND two (2) years of full-time experience in food service, including one (1) year in a supervisory role.
  • Option B:
    Four (4) years of relevant experience, including one (1) year managing a cafeteria or food service establishment with staff supervision.
  • Option C:
    An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined above.
