Job Description

Thank you for your interest in Pittsford Schools! The Pittsford Central School District is looking for a Head of Maintenance. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of building, installation, maintenance and repair tasks in one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical repair, welding, sheet metal work, auto mechanics, masonry, sewage facilities maintenance, and water distribution systems. The work may also involve the operation and routine maintenance of motor vehicles, ground-keeping equipment, and other power-driven equipment. Employees work under general supervision, allowing for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Direct supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate maintenance personnel. Does related work as required. This is a 12-month, 260 workday position, 7am-4pm with overtime, Monday–Friday with some weekend and night work based on work needs. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)

  • Perform a wide variety of tasks of ordinary difficulty relating to the electrical, mechanical, or construction trades
  • Ability to manage and process payroll, billing, and attendance records for department 
  • Ability to manage work order requests and assign work to individuals in department
  • Ability to monitor, adjust, problem solve, diagnose HVAC systems
  • Ability to supervise subordinate maintenance personnel in a professional manner
  • Install, maintain, repair, replace and rebuild electrical fixtures, equipment and wiring systems
  • Install, maintain, repair, replace and rebuild plumbing equipment and systems including 
  • Install, maintain, repair and rebuild sewer and water distribution systems
  • Clean, maintain, and repair boilers, pumps, heaters, piping, valves, traps, compressors, and generators 
  • Perform a wide variety of steam fitting, forging, welding, sheet metal fabricating or machine shop activities
  • Mix cement and plaster, lay bricks and blocks, plaster walls, finish concrete work, stone cutting, and other related masonry work
  • Build, install, maintain, and repair, refinish, assemble doors, stairs, walks, floors, desks, chairs, cabinets, shelves, tables, windows, locks, carpets, ceilings, roofs, gutter systems, weather stripping, paneling, and other parts of buildings
  • Prepare, paint and/or refinish wood, metal and other surfaces
  • Install, maintain and/or repair upholstery, glass, clocks, meters and other miscellaneous items
  • Perform minor preventative mechanical maintenance tasks on motor vehicles and grounds equipment, disassemble and repair lawnmowers, and hydraulic attachments 
  • Install and maintain signs, traffic islands and place road markings using hand-operated machinery or pre-formed markings
  • Oil and grease equipment such as cranes, air compressors, and air hoists and perform necessary repair work
  • Operate automobiles, trucks, air compressors, riding/push lawnmowers, snowplows and other motorized equipment
  • Erect fences, bleachers, goalposts, repair sprinklers and drainage systems, install playground and athletic equipment
  • Perform ground maintenance work, such as fence installation and repair, sign fabrication and repair, equipment (including athletic) repair, lawn cutting and maintenance (such as trimming, planting, weeding) and ice and snow treatment and removal

Job Qualifications

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions associated with building, grounds, and mechanical maintenance and repair
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work from plans, specifications and rough sketches
  • Ability to lay out work for self and others
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Manual dexterity
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • (A) Two years of full-time paid or part-time equivalent experience as a skilled tradesman in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades or in grounds-keeping or landscaping; OR,
  • (B) Graduation from a technical high school program in one of the construction or mechanical trades (i.e., carpentry, auto mechanics, electricity, sheet metal work) and one (1) year of experience as described in A).

NOTE: Additional experience may be substituted for the high school diploma on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position. Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.
