Job Description

The Pittsford Central School District is looking for an Assistant Transportation Director. This is a 12 month 260 day position from Monday–Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm. This position will coordinate with the Transportation Director in overseeing the daily operation of school district-owned vehicles and contracted services and the preparation and planning of transportation programs, activities, and transportation routes and schedules. The employee reports directly to, works under the general supervision of the Transportation Director or other higher-level staff member. General supervision is exercised over technical bus operations staff.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help facilitate routing, scheduling, bus maintenance, and inspection of the district-owned fleet
  • Coordinate the bus operator driver safety training program and maintenance of records necessary for obtaining state aid
  • Provide safe, adequate and cost-effective transportation, as well as, supervision and leadership for all transportation staff
  • Work with district and building administration to serve as a liaison between the community and the district on matters pertaining to the transportation department 

SPECIFIC DUTIES: (In collaboration with the Transportation Director)

  • Recommend and implement transportation policy and regulations established by the Superintendent of School and Board of Education.
  • Develop transportation routes for district students, including students with special needs, to district and non-district schools (when appropriate)
  • Oversee transportation for field trips, sports activities or other approved extracurricular activities
  • Oversee the fleet maintenance program, including service and repair, preventive maintenance, and inspections
  • Prepare daily records of maintenance of mileage, students transported and stops made for state reporting, technical and statistical reports on transportation operations and expenditures as requested by the Assistant Superintendent of Business or Superintendent of Schools
  • Help oversee personnel functions including interviewing employees, conducting evaluations, training and disciplinary meetings 
  • Maintain and verify employee payroll and bills for bus repairs and contracted services
  • Serve as a point person for parents and administration concerns regarding student transportation activities and policy issues 
  • Operate a school bus or other district vehicle as needed for the transportation of students or school equipment 
  • Substitute for supervisor as required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Business or Superintendent of Schools

Job Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus, EITHER:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in student transportation planning, budgeting, routing, scheduling, arranging contracted service, or office management; OR,
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree plus four (4) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as defined in (A) above, OR,
  • Six (6) years paid full-time or part-time equivalent experience as defined in (A) above; OR
  • An equivalent combination of training, education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Class *B* Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a *P* (Passenger) endorsement and *S* (School Bus) endorsement, issued by the State of New York.
